Write It Up! Student Book Reviews

The book Dork Diaries by Renee Russell is a drama filled book. Nikki is new at this really snobby, rich kid school. She doesn’t have a clue how to fit in. She is a fantastic artist and her new friends, Chloe & Zoey, try help her fit in. Meanwhile, Nikki gets a crush and a new enemy. There is a lot of drama in the 3 Dork Diaires so will just have to read them! Recommended by Enngely Fernandez Lindenhurst Middle School
The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks is a book for adults that teens would like. In this book, a girl named Ronnie is sent to her father’s house for the summer. Ronnie is always angry because of her parent’s divorce. She vows never to play piano again because her father is a concert pianist. It is about first love, family and heartbreak. It is an excellent book. Review by Emily C. grade 7

“The story of the Lord of the Flies begins in unrealistic way. A plane, carrying a young group of boys, was shot down during a war leaving only children as survivors. Marooned on a tropical island & left to fend for themselves, the boys slowly begin to create a microcosm of the “real” world. At first all of the boys seem to have a common goal, to elect a leader, Ralph, and begin to explore the island. Tensions begin to grow between Ralph and Jack, the other potential leader, all of the boys struggle with their conflicting human instincts.” Kayla Y.grade 12-L.H.S Like to find out more about the book? Among The Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix is a book about a boy named Luke who breaks the law just by being born. He is the third child- in a place where third children are illegal. He hides in the attic and is only allowed in his backyard. He found out there were millions of third children including one across the street. They were planning to rally to stop the population limit so all third children could be free. This is when things get really interesting! Here is an excerpt from Stephen P’s review of 1984 by George Orwell.
“Within this novel Winston Smith lives in one of 3 superstates of the time period, Oceania. Following in the footsteps of similar books such as Anthem by Ayn Rand, 1984 is the story of a man who breaks free of the totalitarian society in which he lives. In constant fear, Winston works a meager job for the Ministry of Truth, one of several ministries that govern the nation. Privacy is a thing of the past, the govt. controls all forms of publication and uses this fear to control people. They even take it so far as to create their own language, which they call Newspeak. As the novel pushes foward, Winston meets a young woman named Julia. Relationships of this kind are quite taboo, however Winston’s eyes have been opened to how “Big Brother” has been controlling him and the rest of the nation. Caught up in their own affair Winston and Julia seek to join a much larger rebel movement, which could help them escape from their oppressed lives or pull them down into an inescapable pit of despair.” Stephen P. The Hotlanta Series by Denene Millner is about two sisters, twins, Sydney and Lauren. They live in one of the richest parts of Atlanta, go to the fanciest private schools, and only date the hottest guys. Their grungy father has just beeen released from prison, a murder is committed, rumors are starting to spread about the Duke’s and really-what is their step-fathers line of work? As they start to uncover secret after secret, the twins start to realize that their perfect family may not be so perfect after all. I really liked how each chapter had either Lauren or Sydney’s perspective; it switched on and off, and kept the story interesting. For anyone who is into action and romance, this book was made for you. -Jackie B. Lindenhurst M.S.

Recently I read the book If I Stay by Gayle Forman. It was the most powerful and emotional book I’ve ever read. Although it was way short and simple, it was beautifully written and sent a strong message. The main character, Mia, has everything: a perfect family, a perfect boyfriend, and a beautiful future. All that is taken from her when she and her family get into a horrible car crash. Mia is the only member of her family who survives. She is in a coma, yet aware of everything going on around her. Mia must choose whether or not to move on, or wake up to face her drastically changed, unknown future. If I Stay is a wonderful, touching story.
